Carol R. Kaufman is the Founder and CEO of Alternatives TLC, LLC, an operational and compliance consulting firm based in Hawthorne, New Jersey.
With more than 40 years of experience, Carol works with startup, small, and growing businesses to help them identify operational and compliance issues before they become expensive problems.
Carol brings energy, enthusiasm, and a genuine passion for solving problems to every engagement. She particularly enjoys identifying challenges that business owners may not recognize, finding practical solutions, and helping organizations operate more effectively.
Whether the answer involves technology, better processes, improved documentation, or simply looking at a problem from a different perspective, Carol thrives on turning complicated challenges into workable solutions.
Today, her consulting focuses on three principal areas:
Form I-9 Compliance
Carol works with employers to help them understand their Form I-9 responsibilities and develop practical processes for completing, reviewing, correcting, organizing, and maintaining paper Form I-9s.
Her services include education and training for business owners and their employees, internal Form I-9 audits, and consulting on corrective actions and ongoing compliance procedures.
She also developed the ATLC Form I-9 Compliance Toolkit, a comprehensive, practical resource designed to help employers establish and maintain an organized paper Form I-9 compliance process.
Small Business Roadmaps
Through her proprietary Small Business Roadmap, Carol evaluates eight key areas of a business: Operations, Legal, Accounting, Human Resources, Security, Technology, Marketing & Sales, and Compliance.
She identifies operational gaps, potential risks, and opportunities for improvement, then works with business owners to develop practical solutions. When appropriate, she also introduces clients to technology providers and other professional resources.
Special Projects and Consulting
Carol also undertakes special projects involving operational due diligence, process development, documentation, security, and organizational improvements. In certain circumstances, she serves as a part-time Chief Operating Officer or Chief Human Resources Officer.
Professional Background
Carol holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Michigan. She began her career in special education, working for seven years with adolescents with emotional and learning disabilities before transitioning into financial services.
In 1979, she became a Commodity Trading Advisor and Commodity Pool Operator (CTA/CPO). In 1982, she developed a back-office accounting system that ultimately became InvesTier®, an internationally recognized multicurrency investor accounting platform for hedge funds and funds of funds. The business was acquired by SunGard in 2002.
Her former alternative investment industry clients included Bridgewater, Moore Capital, Dubin & Swieca (now Highbridge), Richard Dennis, Mesirow, Cargill, Bank of Montreal, DLJ, Ivy Asset Management, HedgeServ, SEI, PFPC, Viteos, Advent, and Gottex, among others.
From 1998 to 1999, Carol also served as a Y2K consultant to Chase, performing due diligence on more than 125 third-party firms.
This broad experience across industries and business functions gives Carol a perspective that combines operational detail with the larger challenges of managing risk, building infrastructure, and supporting business growth.
